A Family Legacy with Home Hardware
The Elmwood Group, founded by the Leger family, is proud to be a cornerstone in the Moncton community, serving as part of the Home Hardware network since 1974. This legacy began when Alfred and Marie Leger returned to New Brunswick after nearly 30 years in Ontario, bringing their dream of a community-focused hardware store to life. From humble beginnings, they opened their first Home Hardware store in Moncton, with Marie’s retail expertise and Alfred’s carpentry background laying a strong foundation.
As business grew, so did the Elmwood Group’s presence. By 1980, they expanded with a second location in Richibucto, and in 1988, Marie became the first woman elected to the Home Hardware Board of Directors—a pioneering achievement that reflected her dedication to both the business and community.
In 1991, Alfred and Marie passed the torch to their son, Alvin Leger, who has led the Elmwood Group’s growth with visionary expansions. He transformed their stores into Home Hardware Building Centres (HHBCs), adding building supplies and new services to meet the evolving needs of the community. By 2005, the Elmwood Group had grown to include locations in Dieppe and Magnetic Hill, offering both HHBC and Home Furniture stores—a groundbreaking combination in the Home Hardware family.
